Doesn`t sound like Heartbeat is being axed to me by reading the first article, it just sounds like they are considering saving money like every other company at the moment.

I may not be popular here but I wouldn`t be sorry to see The Royal go. I have never been able to get into it.

Lets just give in at this point, obviously the crap we see on our screens will get worse.

The success of shows like Dancing On Ice and I'm A Celebrity... are also blamed for squeezing traditional drama out of the schedules.

To look on the positive side, five night a week soaps have done a very good job of squeezing drama from the schedules. Perhaps reducing The Bill to one hour a week and cutting back on Emmerdale will give schedulaers the freedom to try something a bit different, which might not mean Celebrity Chefs Find A Place in the Sun and Have a Weight Loss Cooking Challenge On Ice.

I was just watching an episode of Heartbeat on ITV3 and thought that one of the faces looked strangely familiar; it took me about 5 minutes to realise it was Daniel Craig!

They even had Gary Barlow from Take that on Heartbeat once. Although I do think that was a bit barrel scrapeing to impress the younger generation.

Just seen the news that Heartbeat is to be axed after 18 years and that the new series to be shown next month will the last. Although this will be sad news for the actors and production staff etc, it has to be a mercy that this show will cease to be. When it first began, it was a nicely crafted show with good stories and wonderful use of a Sixties soundtrack.Sadly I felt over the years that the stories weakened considerably and the show became a shadow of its former self.

I had understood that the original series was to be based on the "Constable " stories by Nicholas Rhea. If any of you have read these books, they were allegedly based on the real life adventures of a Yorkshire policeman in the 60's. In these books, the character of Claude Greengrass ( Played by Bill Maynard in the show) had only a very minor role in each book. Sadly due to Bill Maynards popularity, Greengrass was built up to be the major pivot around which the series developed and the series lost track of the original books upon which it was based. Following Maynards replacement due to illness, the replacement characters of Vernon Scripps, David and Aunt Peggy became totally unbelievable and the stories just seemed to be a rehash of stories gone by. The central Constable figure was played by a succesion of actors who seemed to leave only to disappear into obscurity. The wives or girlfriends of the Constable seemed to have a high mortality rate and the show seemed to become a soap in all but name. It is sad that a safe family show has come to an end, but it could have been so much better had the original books been adhered to rather than ignored.

IMO it was never the same without Niamh Cussack.

It really helped the North Yorkshire economy and it must have provided work for thousands of actors

Heartbeat is finally being released on DVD by Network with Series 1 out to buy on the 6th September 2010, we will have to wait and see exactly how much of the music is missing or dubbed etc.... on a brighter note, Network will more than likely get to release all 18 series over the years.
