Favourite Telly Film Slots

Remember the days when ITV and BBC give umbrella titles to their film presentations.



BBC had a slot calleD,"High Adventure." on a Sarurday for many years, these were usually action films or a Western with good old John Wayne.



Tuesday nights were always good for comedy on BBC in the sixtties and seventies this is where I got my first taste of seeing Alistair Sim in ,"The Green Man and,"Laughter In Paradise."



My all time fave slots though were the Saturday Matinee on BBC 2 and the afternoon matinee on a Monday in my HTV region.

It`s got to be The Midnight Movie on Saturday nights on Beeb2 in the seventies, such a treat as a teenager to have something to stay up and watch; remember there was bugger all else on late at night in those days. It didn`t matter what the film was it was just great to be able to watch them.

We used to have a Thursday afternoon matinee in ATV-land in the late 70s/early 80s that showed films for kids between school finishing and the news starting.



The only one I remember is Jack the Giant Killer but that's because it was (and still is) amazing!

In the early 1980s, the BBC had a good line in interesting films at 5.30s on weekdays - there were seasons about 1940s actresses and a season of films based on radio shows which took in ITMA, Radio Parade of 1935, Crook's Tour and Death at Broadcasting House. It would be great if BBC4 could do something like.

Hi Howard. In the 1970s the local cinema - be it in a large town - would have the 'Midnight Special' film on occasions, starting around 11 pm. I remember seeing Rachel Welsh being miniaturized to pass through a blood vessel! The business was quite good too - a full house.



I do think that land based television should put a good film on every evening at 9 pm

Hiya John, Wasn`t that film called The Fantastic Voyage, Raquel Welch in miniature or otherwise was a site for sore eyes at that age.

Don't Watch Alone, STV, and i am sure in many other regions in the early 1970's. Started with the Universal Horrors.



Wayne In Action, on the BBC. Featuring John Wayne. (of Course)



And Cinema International (think that was the name) on BBC2 again in the early 70's. Saw Truffaut's brilliant The Bride Wore Black when i was 10 or 11.

It was also a novelty to have something on the telly at that time of night as BBC and Itv ususally closed down round about midnight, if not earlier.



I remember seeing Elvis in "Loving You." in this slot, after the film before closedown they played Presleys "In The Ghetto, an inspired idea.



The conitinuity announcers always pointed out that Radio Two was still broadcasting until 2. a.m.



Usually the announcer was David Allen a familiar voice who presented Radio Two's Country Club in the seventies.

i used to enjoy watching the film seasons on bbc2 at 6.00pm in the 1980's i can remember seeing many films including - charlie chan (warner oland/sidney toler), the saint (louis hayward/george sanders/ hugh sinclair), the falcon (george sanders/tom conway), sherlock holmes (basil rathbone), fu manchu (christopher lee), randolph scott westerns, elvis presley and carry ons.
