Not too many years ago, I would scoff at the idea of watching Midsomer Murders. The combination of preposterously tame storylines and ham acting meant that I just couldn't take the program seriously enough. A few years on and not only have I mellowed a bit, but I actually like the program. The reason? well I happen to like the locations, in fact that's the main reason I watch it.

For me the show serves as a stark reminder that away from the hustle and bustle of suburbia, quintessential english village life is still around, which I think is rather nice. Long may the series continue.

What does anybody else think about the series?

Too many bally cardigan-wearing murderers for my liking.

Oh, it's all very nice, I'll mark you. Nice settings, nice crime fighters, nice victims and even nice killers. And, to be fair, it makes a pleasant change from watching somebody being disembowelled on a morgue table like the American CSI-type shows.

But I'm a Sweeney type of girl. Perhaps if John Nettles would get in a punch up every now and again it might give the show had a bit more oomph?

Aye well, if John Nettles was to venture up North occasionally to film the odd Midsomer Murder episode near say Longsight in Manchester, he'd be almost guaranteed a punch up.

Your thoughts on the series and your reason for watching it almost exactly mirror mine; I've even started reading Caroline Graham's Midsomer novels. There are about six of them.

The locations are very easy on the eye but very close to London too.

If you're interested they are listed here:-

    Midsomer Murders Locations Index

Against each entry are photos and snippets of information about each. You'll also find some secret locations; these are usually buildings or residences which are privately owned, and which the owners wish to keep that way.

Another good point about the series, from my point of view, is that it features a great many "time served" British Actors some of whom seem to have been absent from our screens for some time.

The series has also been exported successfully across the world

I'm sure millions worldwide are watching it and thinking, what a picturesque country.

Just wondering what people's views were on Midsomer, the evergreen Tom Barnaby musy one day hang his boots up. Could the show continue without him?

As long as the serried ranks of English character actors are prepared to be cast MM will there and Nettles still wants to work.

Some of the cast have been in twice already - Richard Johnson et al.

Oh it could go on and on and on.

It's that missus of his, Joyce, you have to watch out for. Whenever she gets involved with one of her community projects or an art class someone gets done in

Having watched a couple of afternoon Morse repeats (1991) and the repeat of the very first Midsommer (1997) I thought Midsommer had aged better than Morse, which seemed to have had clunky music added to important scenes, (were they there in the first place I ask myself).

    Hi.

I suspect it will go on for a lot longer with the credit crunch, as the house prices must be pretty low in midsummer to get people to move there

Filming has been commisioned up until 2010 and if you scroll further down you'll find John Nettles' version of the origin of Cully's name:--

The anglicised version of the place she was 'conceived' which I think was a town on Lac Leman, Lake Geneva to us. According to John Nettles in the programme.
