Was Scotty not Scottish, I genuinely never knew!
The award for the worst Scottish accent must go to the Chuckle Brothers. When they do the McChuckles its awful.
I have always loved Robinson Crusoe, be it the book, or any of the films or tv series ever made. So one day last week, when Channel 5 showed a version I had never seen, with Pierce Brosnan as the hero, I thought great....but how wrong I was!
Okay, it's generally known that the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scots sailor who was shipwrecked on an island. So here, we had Brosnan using the worst Scots accent since Scotty in Star Trek (and I believe James Doohan who played Scotty was a Canadian?). For company he had the captain's dog (?) which survived the wreck, and then along came Friday. A savage, who had never seen a white man before; but who mastered english fluently, in about ten minutes, and was holding theological discussions within weeks (in screen time!). This was the most lacklustre and dull version I have ever seen, of this classic tale! I suppose it might get some kind of award for being one of the worst films ever, when Channel 5 next run their weekly 'One Hundred Best of/Worst of /Whatever shows!

For me, the best version of robinson crusoe has to be the B/W version on tv some time ago. I think it was an Astrian production but I'm not quite sure.
Yes, the old tv series in Black and White was good, with the haunting theme tune! (And I read somewhere That it WAS an austrian production, if memory serves!)
And as to James Doohan, he certainly was NOT a Scot, and I repeat the information I have been given, or read somewhere, that he was in fact Canadian. But back to my original point, even the very tongue in cheek Peter O'Toole version was much better, at least the whole thing was done as a comedy...whether you liked it or not! And it was consistent in itself. If you didn't like the first ten minutes, you could bale out and watch something else! I fell for the Brosnan disaster on the basis that I had never seen / heard of it, I love the story, and I was recovering from a slight illness at the time, and couldn't find anything else on the tv, or be bothered to watch a DVD!
( And before anyone bothers to point out UK Gold or whatever, I don't have it! I get by on the basic five UK channels for now, owing to personal circumstances!)
Why do film makers insist on using American and English actors with the wealth of fine Scots actors available who do not need to perfect the accent??!!
Perhaps it is not noticeable to other than the Scots who are cringing!
Brosnan's Irish .... perhaps they don't know the difference! I can never understand why, if film actors cannot do an accent properly, nobody tells them! They do in the theatre. Probably don't want to upset the little dears.
