    BBC 4 Friday September 16th.

    9:30pm

The Pink Floyd Story: Which One's Pink?

Over 40 years after Britain's foremost 'underground' band released their debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Pink Floyd remain one of the biggest brand names and best-loved bands in the world.
This film features extended archive footage alongside original interviews with David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, and traces the journey of a band that has only ever had five members, three of whom have led the band at different stages of its evolution.

    10:30pm

    A Pink Floyd Miscellany 1967-2005

A compilation of rarely screened Pink Floyd videos and performances, beginning with the Arnold Layne promo from 1967 and culminating with the reunited band's performance at Live 8 in 2005. Also including a newly-restored Another Brick in the Wall and performances of Grantchester Meadows, Cymbeline and others.

    11:30pm

    Pink Floyd

Concert film shot in the ruins of Pompeii in 1972 which captures the young, long-haired post-Syd Barrett Pink Floyd in all their spacey but melancholy glory

Thanks for the heads up Jim.
Another great night at the door of BBC4.
I already have the third item "Pink Floyd at Pompeii" (an excellent "concert" film, mostly shot in the ruins of an audience-less ampitheatre) but the other 2 will be eagerly anticipated.

Haven't been able to read thru the whole of this thread but just wondered if anyone had heard whether the BBC are still planning to cut all the BBC4 funding?

There is a petition and campaign to prevent this from happening and to preserve the channel as it is.

    This looks interesting

BBC - BBC Four Programmes - Time Shift, Series 11, Dear Censor

Lifting the lid on the world of cinema censorship, this programme has unique access to the files of the British Board of Film Classification. Featuring explicit and detailed exchanges between the censor and film-makers, 'Dear Censor' casts a wry eye over some of the most infamous cases in the history of the board.

From the now seemingly innocuous Rebel Without a Cause, the first 'naturist' films and the infamous works of Ken Russell, and up to Rambo III, this frank and surprisingly warm documentary demonstrates how a body created by the industry to safeguard standards and reflect shifts in public opinion has also worked unexpectedly closely with the film-makers themselves to ensure that their work was able reach an audience.

As the controller of BBC4 in Holy Flying Circus had it; "I want a three part series about canals, a documentary about Scandanavian jazz and some old footage of a barge. That's all we're going to be showing for the next six months."

    And why not?

(Though I'd say there are more deserving subjects.)

Agree with the dancing banana Captain. I do hope that 'they' use BBC4 as a channel for really good archived material, matured in the cellar from the years of plenty, to help us over the lean years to come.

brilliant show last night on george formby hosted by frank skinner who is a massive fan and quite anaccomplished ukelele player himself .
dont worry if you missed it
it will be repeated a lot but thats no bad thing when its a bbc4 show .

i agree with earlier comments of bbc4 being the new bbc2
its probably because 4 dont chase ratings and focus on quality which is what 2 used to do .

I watched the programme about Sid Field and I have to say that what I saw didn't make me laugh. He was only shown in clips so the content may not have been entirely representative but I couldn't see anything in him that was obviously seen by his many admirers. Maybe it's just a case of comedy being much broader in those days, his brand of humour certainly seemed to lack subtlety.

The Golfing sketch that takes up about 20 minutes of London Town is about as funny as anthrax though no doubt Julian will disagree .

I enjoyed the first part of Michael Grade's Story of Music Hall - worth catching if it's repeated (which I'm sure it will be)

When appearing in the West End, Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Michael Redgrave (if their plays finished earlier) would pop into the theatre playing Strike a New Note and stand at the back of the stalls, simply in order to pick up some tips on comedy timing from Sid Field...with a live audience the golfing sketch would be very funny !

When can we all get to see Sid Field in That's the Ticket (1940)?
It seems like that'll be the only way we can really judge

Well, he does his greatest hits in London Town and if you can't make up your mind after that, there's always Cardboard Cavalier. They both have Mary Clare so you time wont be entirely wasted
