Recognise anyone from this old curiosity shop clip? Lol
Episode 2 proved to be just as enjoyable as episode one, only more so. Once the 'whodunnit' element was quickly dispensed with the series seemed to gain pace and the cast certainly livened up along with it. It's totally preposterous but great fun and I am looking forward to the concluding episode next week.

I enjoyed the 1st series and the first episode of the 2nd but i found it very silly tonight which put me off a bit Johnny and jimmy Kray come onit is getting far to far fetched now.
i've got a great idea for 'whitechapel III' -DI Chandler goes on holiday to mexico with the police football team and is jailed for the theft of a bracelet-Miles flies over to mexico and exposes a gang of criminals hell bent on recreating the bobby moore scandal of 1970!! well,it has an east end theme to it at least?
Better still, Chandler and Miles investigate recreations of all the murders in a popular East End based soap, climaxing in the killer massacring the entire cast of Eastenders!name='jaycad' timestamp='1287474721' post='484080']

& not before time !
The format is good for a few series yet. The sheer hokey daftness is something I find rather appealing![]()

It does beggar belief. It seems to lurch from comedy to thriller and you do wonder how the actors manage to keep a straight face. It's a world where the whole of the Met seem to have gone on their hols.

I think you can only take daftness so far, before it becomes just plain irritating as in last nights episode. It was almost as if the writers had got bored, screwed up the script and thought lets write a comedy instead. A shame because the first Whitechapel was quite good. Lets look at the evidence that Whitechapel 2 is possibly the worst drama on TV this year, even surpassing Bouquet of Barbed Drivel.
1)The 'Frozen Egg' Kray twins. Now supposedly they were Ronnie's offspring, but someone should have a word with the clinic concerned because they appear to have got the samples mixed up from Trigger from Only Fools and Horses.
2) Rupert Penry-Jones. So wooden I failed to spot him when he was dumped in Epping Forest.
3) Donkey's left in a police car park, as if no one/or police would notice (Yeah right)
4) The 'Trigger' Kray Twins being allowed to wreck a police station, kidnap cops and fire Mac 10's at a restaurant. (Yeah right) They would have been nicked straightaway.
5) Chris Fulford's character still being allowed to work as a cop after the last series.
I rest my case for the biggest steaming turkey this side of Christmas!![]()

is it just me or are the lead characters personalities completely different than in the first series? don't tell me roy hodgson has taken over as script writer?name='DB7' timestamp='1287516803' post='484300']

ha ha!!! the 'kray' twins are the least threatening villians i've ever seen! the daftest scene was when they were seemingly re-creating the famous 'vest, braces and horn rimmed spectacles' photograph of ronnie and reggie-why oh why???name='Tigon Man' timestamp='1287518037' post='484307']

Ridiculous, especially the OCD, and the seeming charmed life of the go-between. Aren't there any original script writers out there?
regards,
HG
Of course it's ridiculous! It's not meant to be taken seriously. That's why it is such fun. It's a throwback to the days when entertainment was just that .... it's just like an old serial or a comic come to life.
'Chandler' and Miles' are 'Batman and Robin' while the 'Kray/Trigger twins' are 'Dr Satan' etc ..... and they inhabit a make believe world where anything is possible.
Re originality .... I think it is highly original. It may be a total load of old cobblers, but there certainly hasn't been anything like it on UK TV before, well not since the demise of The Avengers et al.
It's pure hokum of the type about which people on here are always saying 'they don't make 'em like that anymore'. Well here is one ..... as daft a concept as Adam Adamant, The Champions, Randall and Hopkirk etc.
It certainly isn't in the same class as those programmes but it's a start. More please!![]()
i'd agree with you bats if the first series was in the same vein but series 1 was quite good and devoid of silliness (apart from steve pembertons 'league of gentlemen' reprise-i kept expecting DI chandler to join in and shout "what's that tubbs? this is a local station for local police,we'll have no trouble here!")
it doesn't annoy me in any way-it's just a shame that the writers felt the need to keep to the 'copycat' theme instead of building on a series with established characters.
The first series definitely had a more serious tone to it, but apart from the copycat idea (which was copied from the film Copycat), it was a pretty straightforward police drama and I guess a second series was commissioned on the basis of the copycat theme being continued.name='jaycad' timestamp='1287569648' post='484457']
it's just a shame that the writers felt the need to keep to the 'copycat' theme instead of building on a series with established characters.
The same could be said for The Avengers .... the early episodes were serious crime dramas and it wasn't until the characters of Steed and Cathy Gale were established that the plots began to become more outlandish. When the series moved onto film the sillness just went through the roof.
The same thing happened to the James Bond films and, to a lesser extent, The Man From Uncle .... 'cos that was fairly silly to start with.
I will be surprised if a third series of Whitechapel is forthcoming because the idea appears to be running out of steam already, hence the reliance on tricks and gimmicks to keep the viewer interested. The same thing happened to Dr Who during he Tennant years .... that series needed the boost that Matt Smith has given it. Whitechapel doesn't have the fan base of that programme so I expect this series will be the last, which would be a shame 'cos I really like it.
Home guard, yes there are origional screen writers out there, namely me if given a chance, but they don`t look for origionality they look for `safe` these days.
Yes, I agree with everyone, it is ridiculous! But it keeps us watching which is quite clever in itself isn`t it? The storyline IMO had great potential to become a great DRAMA rather that verging on the hilarious as we have taken it to be. I kind of agree with Bats that it is a good British product, the way it used to be, but such a shame it wasn`t worked on more to create a more believable and serious atmosphere. I would have prefered to have waited longer to see something better.
As for the OCD, I have OCD and it`s not that far fetched, although how he dragged himself away from the light switch to smash it if his condition is so bad isn`t that believable IMO. That is a different action altogether and he may as well have walked out of the room and slamned the door behind him instead, but people with the condition may be different. I`m not sure.
Lol Tigon, Trigger. And the mum, if only Babs Windsor had left Easties earlier. She would have just added to the comedy with that mincing walk she has and that carry on laugh. Much more entertaining!
Over all I would hate to miss the last episode, but cringe at the thought of a third series.

Michelle darling if you had written this series of Whitechapel, I'm sure it would have been far more entertaining than this load of old cobblers!
In most police series there has to be a grounding in reality to some extent, unless you are playing it for comedy or comedy drama of which Whitechapel is neither. In a series that purports to reinact atrocities by real villains from very recent history as it did so well in the first Ripper story, to throw away an enjoyable and reasonably factual concept in favour of comic book villainy and Keystone Kops is plain wrong. How this second series was commissioned is beyond me, did the ITV high-ups look at the script.
Oh and if I were the writer of this series, I wouldn't venture down to the East End of London for a long while, I don't think members of a certain family would have taken to kindly to having their family name made to look ridiculous.![]()

THAT definately crossed my mind too Paul. I don`t know if it claimed at the end of the credits that it was purely fiction, anything else is coincidental etc as they often do. If not, the family could try and sue, if the scriptwriter was LUCKY! LOL.
