Phil Davis - always good and always worth watching

Penry-Jones - after The 39 Steps I'm not so sure

I like the idea behind this (a Jack the Ripper copycat terrorises modern London) but the writers are responsible for the atrocious Primeval so I am not too hopeful. The director has a track record ranging from Footballer's Wives via Eastenders to Life on Mars. I thinks this is definitely a 'wait and see' production.

I've just seen a preview clip on ITV and it doesn't bode well. Phil Davis and Rupert Penry-Jones playing two cops (one rookie, one experienced) at loggerheads while trying to solve a Whitechapel style murder. If these are the best bits Phil Davis might not be able to save this.

Wasn't there a 'Goodnight Sweetheart' episode where JtR follows Gary back to modern day London and gets run over by a bus?

I'm looking forward to this because of Phil Davies, couldn't care less about Mr Penry-Jones, but mainly looking forward to seeing Steve Pemberton.

I really enjoyed his performances in "Under the greenwood tree" a few years back and more recently in the library episodes of Doctor Who.

Whitechapel looks like it will give him something to get his teeth into....

I don't know about that one .... but there have been a few JTR in the modern world films .... Time after Time is probably the best. Among the others that I can recall are Jack's Back, The London Bridge Murders and an into the future escapade in an episode of Star Trek.

yes,the star trek episode was entitled WOLF IN THE FOLD.

i am really looking forward to seeing this 3 part series, and i think i may be right in saying that it is the first uk adaptation of the ripper murders set in the modern day.

at last a different take on the murders with some fantastic actors.

    ..... and Rupert Penry-Jones!

(although I did think his speech at the South Bank Show Awards was very funny)

ah well, its good to be different so they say.

after watching the christmas version i went out and bought the robert powell version (charity shop 25p) and taped the kenneth moore version shown on film four a few weeks ago.

maybe i'm biased as i dont live too far away from where it was filmed.

They're both pretty good films. Do you have the Hitchcock version?

Back on topic ..... I saw some clips of Whitechapel last night and it looked pretty good, a bit Messiah-ish.

However it was well-received by quite a few of us (we just weren't quite so noisy about our opinions ) so no need to be apologetic. I thought Penry-Jones was excellent in it.

well so far 'whitechapel' is like watching a british version of 'se7en'(even down to the opening credits) whilst reading the official police records of the jack the ripper case with a few key words such as 'shabby' and 'hell' thrown in for good measure! i reckon the murderer will turn out to be a conspiracy involving prince harry,dr hilary jones and lewis hamilton if previous 'ripper' dramas are anything to go by!

I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable, compelling and atmospheric opening episode to this three-part mystery thriller. The hour passed all too quickly and I wanted the programme to continue … looking forward to next week’s episode. Steve Pemberton was excellent as the obsessively eccentric Ripperologist, Buchan, who gets increasingly involved in the second installment
