Not strictly film; but still classic UK drama.

Does anyone have any eps of Callan? Except for Ser3 which is available on DVD.

    Many thanks!

It's worth checking ebay periodically. Two episodes from the TV series are currently available.

The black and white shows are like hens teeth, and I believe some are missing from the archives. I have most of season 4, though, in copies from UK Gold.

The only downside is that about 5 minutes is cut from each episode so more ads could be fitted into the timeslot. Ideally, you need someone with copies from the mid-80s screenings on Channel 4.

Talking of fitting in more adds - has anyone noticed that when you switch on the telly, you invariably get the adds? Some programmes can go on for 6 or 7 minutes from the start

and then there's a flaming commercial break! Are they shoving more adds on these days? Or do I imagine it?

You imagine nothing, Jim. The rules regarding advertising on Satellite/Cable channels have been more lax than terrestrial for some years, and more recently ITV were alowed to cram in more ads (at deafening volume, I might add).

"THE SHIELD" titles come after the first commercial break on terrestrial TV.

It's murder! I dunno if you've noticed, but at certain times during the evening you can flick through nearly every channel on satellite TV and find ads on! Where's it all going to end? Regards, Decks.

Can anyone advise as to where I maybe able to obtain series one & two of Callan starring Edward Woodward. I did manage recently to get series 4, but that was imported and cost a fair bit. If anyone knows if these can be got from home (G, I'd love to know where!

Series 1 and 2 are not available legitimately. Several episodes are 'lost' and those that remain are not in great shape. Series 3 has been deleted in the UK and is now only available from Australia as is series 4. Copies used to turn up on ebay but they are no longer able to be sold via that outlet. Individual collectors may have copies .... and you can always pick your way through this lot ....

I recently got hold of series 4 from a stockist in US advertising on Ebay. It's an Australian import which is licensed to Umbrella Entertainment. The box set includes the feature length film which I already own, but I was so desperate for another series I didn't mind. Series 1 & 2 still alludes me that It doesn't look as though it's going to be released for a long time, at least not over hear anyway. I have posted a request on the sight just in case anything positive comes about. Cheers

I was concerned that there was nothing left of Series 1 & 2 so that's infinitely better news than I thought. Many thanks for that information, Batman (which I'd either forgotten or failed to check).

If Adam Adamant Lives! can be released with 12 episodes missing and in inferior picture quality, I see no reason why Callan shouldn't. I'll "take it and like it" as Humphrey Bogart once said.

These were being sold some time ago on Ebay and I bought copies from 2 different sources. The quality was dreadful in fact practically unwatchable, i would say about 1/10.

I was led to believe that the original material had all been destroyed and that these copies had found there way from some private collector in America to the Callan Appreciation Society and subsequently made available for sale by people who had bought them and who had made further copies on DVD R. They were apparently offered to the TV company who declined since they were not up to broadcasting standards.

Since no good copies of the early series are known to exist I would suspect that what is being offered here are as above. I would certainly check up with the seller before making a purchase.

If you decide to go ahead please let us know with what result

One has to be careful here since the Australian ones are incorrectly labelled for example what they describe as series 1 is actually the first COLOUR series and not the original b/w. Of these early b/w only 11 episodes exist and as I have said the quality is dreadful. One is better turning off the vision and treating them as radio programmes!

I do have a nice copy of the original Armchair Theatre production, A Magnum for Schneider, which acted as the pilot for Callan. It was shown on Channel 4, back in its glory days, as part of TV Heaven.

Years ago I saw the first episode of the regular series, which was a partial remake of Magnum, and was a fairly decent quality. I don't have a copy myself, but it shows that there are better quality versions out there somewhere.

You're talking about the UK Retrovision releases ... now deleted.

The Australian Umbrella releases are packaged as Complete Series 3 and Complete Series 4 (inc film). I have those sets and they are excellent .... all in colour and in chronologial order.

I have the B/W episodes and as m'Lord says the pilot is OK but some of the others leave a lot to be desired.

I'd be happy with a proper dvd set of them whatever the quality.

There is a seller on iOffers who is selling the best collection of "CALLAN" episode on DVD I'v ever seen for £43.28 plus postage. It includes the Armchair theatre play and the "THIS IS CALLAN" 1974 film. He trades under YRNAMEHERE (491) and says he is happy to sell in partial sets so if you already have a few episodes it don't cost nout to ask.

Yes a quick check up indicates you are correct. I would be very surprised indeed if anyone can turn up really good copies of b/w series - having said that there is no doubt someone out there who has some or all of the episodes.

with tv the way it is now days, I can't see any of the channels showing the pilot episode, so was wondering if at all, you could do a copy for my own personal use on either format. I don't mind buying, exchanging, swapping etc. Cheers!
