Like wot you said. I like Julia. Wonder if the air miles thing has been investigated yet?
Just watched this, which I recorded (too busy at the time) and what an excellent programme it was. Julia Bradbury appears to be genuinely interested in the subject and allows the people she talks to to speak without putting herself at the centre of the action. Her father's comparison on trout tickling was priceless. Let's hope the rest of the series are as good.

I agree - very good. But I have only just realised it is THAT Julia who is embroiled in the Air Miles 'scandal'...

Brilliant series, Wainwright Walks even better and makes the wacking great LCD TV worthwhile. Beautiful girl and wonderful programme, a standard bearer for British TV.
I am looking forward to her Coast to Coast Walk.

How many people called Julia Bradbury did you think there were?
Most people seem to know her from some consumer or holiday programmes. I only know her from the Wainwright Walks, the Railway Walks and Kill It, Cook It, Eat It, but I think she was excellent on all of those.
Apparently she's due to join Country File as a presenter later this year
Steve
good! is she replacing michaela 'gary lineker on a crash diet' strachan?
I am watching all of these repeats again. The whole series shines through and some very interesting locations are aired.
The first screenings on BBC 4 were often coupled with other historic railway programmes.
With so many trackbeds having been converted to footpaths, there must surely be scope for a second series?![]()
Part of the Cleveland Way from Clay Bank to Blakey Ridge is old industrial railway tracks.

Never even crossed my mind - I just enjoyed the excellent programme . Haven't seen the Wainwright Walks at all, I must confess. Is the 'scandal' something to do with Watchdog? I am totally not up to speed with any of it...

I've no idea what that comment about her is meant to mean, but no. I think Michaela will stay with them. Julia will just be added to the team of reporters.name='jaycad']good! is she replacing michaela 'gary lineker on a crash diet' strachan?
I've always liked Michael Strachen as a reporter/presenter of anything to do with the countryside or wildlife ever since I saw her presenting something early in her career. She was sitting down on the ground and animals were running around all over the place. But when one quite large animal jumped on her back she didn't go all girlie or anything. Not a squeal or a scream was heard. She just rolled with the punch and carried on presenting. A very professional job.

The "scandal" (always in quotes) is that there's an investigation into someone fiddling air miles. Julia Bradbury might have been peripherally affected, she might not.
She's taking time off from Watchdog while it's being investigated

Well, as I say. I am out of it - scarcely see any mainstream TV other than the news. I just saw Railways Walks on BBC4 and thought they were darned good. Who bothers with Air Miles these days anyway? To me they seem as '80s' as red braces and all that...
Smudge
It's something about Virgin air miles whereby instead of mileage being deducted when used, the opposite happened when used in the case of some people. She is said to have offered to stand down from Watchdog until investigations have taken place, and she is giving her full co operation with the investigation during this period. On another note, she has a nice set of pins imo. And she can tickle my trout anythime she may wish, especially if she has time on her hands through not appearing on Watchdog for a bit.
All right, now who's responsible for this thread? ... Own up! .... My office! ... Now!!
Pure hell and torment. As someone with a passionate interest in British railways (steam era) and their history, this sort of program just makes me salivate.
And that's about all I can do on this side of the world - iPlayer videos aren't available outside the UK
So stop teasing me .....
(EDIT : And shouldn't that be "dukwdriver", as I was for about 5-6 years ....)

Guilty, I just thought it was a refreshingly good programme and deserved a mention after all the dross we are offered these days. I see Railway Walks has been released on DVD, I did not realise it had already been shown on another channel.
(You are right it should have been `dukwdriver', senior moment I expect.)

It shouldn't tease you too much, not as someone with a passionate interest in British railways (steam era) and their history. The lines she is walking are all abandoned lines. There generally isn't much evidence that there ever was a railway there. It's just a long, thin corridor though the countryside.
But as it was a long strip where there weren't many people (on foot) and where the trains used to deposit things ("Do not flush while the train is standing at a station") they are interesting wildlife corridors

Au contraire. There's so much "atmosphere" along an abandoned railway line. Many of the former railway buildings - especially station buildings - are extant, in private ownership. To stand on an abandoned line, and close one's eyes ....
I have an ambition to stand in the middle of the abandoned Midford viaduct, on the former Somerset & Dorset Rly, close my eyes, and hear the shrill trill of The Titfield Thunderbolt as it trundles underneath

The same as "Unter dem Lavabo befindet sich ein Topf" ?
