If it has to happen....and I have to say my enjoyment of the series has severely dived in Matt Smith's tenure...I'd cast Cillian Murphy as the Doctor and go on my hands and knees [no smirking please] several times to Carey Mulligan to reprise her role as Sally Sparrow for his companion. You heard that pairing here first !!!
now there's just the small problem of penning a brilliant story........

They would be far too young, handsome and glamorous a couple IMO.

The best Doctors were always old men who looked and behaved like much younger men - or even juveniles. Think craggy faces, beaky noses, goofy teeth, goggle eyes etc. Then top it off with a Beatle mop (Troughton) or an old lady's bouffant (Pertwee) or an unruly Struwwelpeter shock (Tom Baker). Throw in childish props like jelly babies, yo yos and catapults and you have the recipe for a delightfully quirky - not to say downright creepy - young/old Doctor.

It works less well the other way around (young fogeys like Davison or Smith).

But that juxtaposition of youth and age, modern and antiquated, brilliant and infantile - that's what makes The Doctor an irresistible character.

Well that and a plummy English accent

These casting agents need to jettison any idea of our fave timelord as some perfectly groomed youthful pin-up
