Reminds me that I used to collect football programs (the printed variety) as a kid. I had quite a nice collection before the family moved to Australia - I gave many away.
Anyone else still collect those programs now? How much does the average Premier League program cost to buy now?

Dave.

I used to collect them, keeping the train ticket inside too! Sold the lot.

I think the programme at Brentford must be two fifty now. Good quality though. I remember the eight page ones that were mainly adverts and the team listings, then one year they printed them in red with a fuzzy photo of the ground from the air on and we thought they'd gone posh.

Weren't Brentford involved in that game when the dog came on the pitch and attacked the goalkeeper (Chic Brodie?).

Bats.

Remember Gerry Harrison well from Sunday afternoon footy highlights on Anglia TV when I lived in Norfolk and watched Norwich City (79-84), GH was not exactly popular there being an Ipswich Town fan!!

I used to be a massive footy prog collector, a couple from my collection, Aldershot v Bristol City 1932/3 and v Notts County 66/7:

Stopped buying them a few years ago though.... bad enough finding space to store all my old issues!.....and DVD collection

How times have changed.

I was reading a book titled 'The Best of Chums' which included a selection of schoolboy stories that once appeared in the 'Chums' comic between 1892 and 1941.

In a story titled "The Council School Boy" young Tom Speedie is the son of a famous professional football player Jim Speedie of Midchester City. The father wants young Tom to become a well educated gentleman so decides to send him to an English Public School. The father earns 600 quid from a long service benefit match (remember those?) and uses the money to send his son to the boarding school.
Tom does not let on to the fellow pupils that his father is a professional footballer because that would give away that he was from a working class background as that would bring disgrace and shame.
Later in the story Tom's father visits him at school and the rest of the class snobs find out his real occupation.

Then to quote from the story - "Speedie had called this well groomed, quietly dressed man, who looked as though he might be an ordinary business or professional man, father ! And yet it was said that his father was merely a paid footballer! There must be some mistake.
Tom Speedie had been afraid of that moment. He remembered how the Head had advised him on his first day not to mention that his father was a professional footballer.
The fear came to him that the Head might be cool towards, if not snub, his father."

LOL times certainly have changed, Can't imagine you being able to buy a comic called Chums anymore either.

And yes Bats that was Chic Brodie at Colchester. Ended his career that injury and he went back to being a London Cabbie.

Sounds like you all need to get a copy of, The Best of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly by Simon Inglis and published by English Heritage, I am sure you will just love it! It is a fantastic book, a real gem, covering the period September 1951- August 1971. It will bring back a lot of memories.

By the way I have met Gerry Harrison, very nice bloke. There was a commentator in the North, called John Helm, his party trick was to name all 92 League Clubs in alphabetical order in about 2 minutes.

I had dinner with him and the ITV crew during the World Cup in Mexico in 1986, and asked him to do it. It seems the rest of the guests didn't know of his secret, but gave him a standing ovation when he was finished.

Default The Big Match

Brian Moore, the Peter Allis of football. Those old grey days come rushing back to the old grey matter watching the team in dark grey playing the team in light grey, one side being Chelsea, the other being Man Utd or whoever. Watching the Doc, Bill Nick, Shankley, Sexton and others, complete gents, not losing their rags when things go against them.

Does anyone remember "Who was the player who kicked the ball off the line in the opening credits for The Big Match, which was the early catchphrase for Brian Moore, the phrase being "Hooked Off The line"?

Roll on the golden age of footie.

When Gerry Harrison used to commentate on Norwich matches in the 70s he used to get a lot of stick from the crowd. He got his own back by lining up nearly empty plastic coffee cups and flicking them off the commentary platform and into the crowd during the match!

As Fareham_Bee will know, Chic was a real Bees' legend, a very stylish, classy keeper.
Sadly, he died quite young having lost his son, murdered by his own fiancee I believe.

I used to have my copy of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly ordered with our newsagent in Smethwick. I could hardly wait till the next issue came along.
I used to read every page and then when finished I'd cut out the great colour photos that featured in the mag ( the centre pull out pictures of players were superb) and then post them off to the different clubs with a letter (and stamped return envelope) asking for the particular player to sign it for me.
I always received the pictures back signed.

There were two letdowns though. I once received a prized double paged picture of Dennis Law back from Manchester United with a rubber stamped signature on it instead of the real thing.
I also wrote to Mel Hopkins (ex Spurs) who was then playing for Brighton. I sent him a full page picture of himself plus another two pictures of other Brighton players and asked him if he could get them signed for me.
He returned the pictures signed but on closer inspection I noticed that all three signatures were in Hopkins own handwriting. Bas***d !

Happy days.

Dave.
