There were several over the years. One I remember was Tim Barrett.

Whoever he is I'll bet he's still got the bruises on his shoulder to prove it!

I wonder just how old a gag "Mandy's" tripping over into a bow-legged walk is; I noticed that Mickey Rooney did it dressed as a Carmen Miranda look-alike in one of his films.

I'd be interested to hear of any favourite sketches or characters, or, any opinions on the man, his show or his acting.

Personally, I doubt I could nominate a favourite character. However, The Vicar always cracked me up bigtime.

I liked the skinhead character and of course - "Oooh, you are awful...but I like you":) 'Jolly Jack Tar' the sailor was also a favourite.

I've always wondered why the Dick Emery Show has not been repeated more.

Having said that though, I did catch a few of the old scetches from the show on an old video tape I found a while ago and I have to be honest in saying that they were not as funny as I remembered them.

By co-incidence, I happened to notice last night that The Dick Emery Show is screened on one of the UK cable channels (UK Drama). Unfortunately if the episode I saw is anything to go by, it seems to be the same batch that was shown a couple of years back.

I remember a very funny sketch where he was a driver of a hearse and he tried to race with a motorbike, only to lose the body in a pond and supplement its loss by putting rocks into the coffin .

Perhaps I'm stuck in a time-warp but I find the Dick Emery sketches just as funny, if not more so, as when they were broadcast. I never fail to crack up when "Mandy" gets hold of the wrong end of the stick- "Ooh, you ARE awful" -and trips up as she walks off into the distance. Mind you, I love other non -pc shows of that time such as "On the Buses" too

*Dick emery walks up to an Ice Cream Van and hoarsely asks

    DE : Ice Cream Please!

    Ice-Cream man : Crushed Nuts?

    DE : No...Laryngitis!

*In a sketch with Ian Cuthbertson , a Policeman asks

Policeman : Where is Jock " The Razor " Frazer?

Ian Cuthbertson : He just popped out for a slash!

*DE is wearing an Evening Suit which has seen better days. He is obviously in need of a wee! However he arrives at a Door marked MEN , winces and moves on. This happens 3 or 4 times. Finally he finds one marked GENTLEMEN and looks relieved!:)

It's good to hear some of these DE quotes.

I guess I'm also stuck in a timewarp - I still find it funny. As for On The Buses... I've never seen the TV shows but I count all three films amongst my collection and like em'. But then again, I'm from the days when PC stood for 'Police Constable'.

I liked all of the above sketches - particualrly the Dad and Son Skinheads - (which I think was him and Roy Kinnear.) I have a VHS of some BBC out-takes and there are a couple of Dick Emery on a boat at Longleat doing the Skinhead sketches and a sea-lion keeps barking.

I also enjoyed the D.I.Y. man - when he showed a friend his latest work the lot would usually fall to pieces. I think over all I think that the vicar and the character who always landed up grabbing the interviewer and saying "I'd like a nice young man like you" were the ones I enjoyed the most. Happy memories of childhood and being allowed to stay up late to watch Dick Emery on a Friday night!

Yeah, it was Roy Kinnear who played the father. I liked those sketches too. I couldn't remember the name of the son, but searching on the web seems to bring the name Gaylord up for that character. Unfortunately Roy Kinnear doesn't feature in the 'short' episodes currently being shown on the UK Drama at the moment (UK Drama? No, I can't figure that one out either).

I got during christmas the best of dick emery

    it features

Emery's flair with character, costume and make-up saw a host memorable characters fill the show: the man-hungry, sexually frustrated Hettie: the infamous toothy vicar: the skinhead Bovver Boy: camp Clarence: the ageing First World War veteran Lampwick and – of course – Mandy, Emery's most famous character. The appearance of the confused blonde whose stupefied looks eventually progressed to her “ooh, you are awful” catchphrase, were eagerly awaited across the nation. This fantastic selection features the best moments of Dick Emery's television and showcases an indisputable comedic and acting genius.

I got it for £5.99 from HMV

My favourite sketch was called WANGEROO and I am pretty sure it featured Bruce Boa as an American visiting an English Gentlemen's Club and Dick Emery played one of the staff who takes him on at poker. It wasn't the most original gag in the world and I recall Jimmy Clitheroe used it in one of his radio shows a few years before - but somehow this is the one I remember and Saturday nights were always a must see for Dick Emery - and although the shows don't look so funny now, the spin off movie OOH YOU ARE AWFUL is still pretty good viewing 35 years on.

Yes, I remember the poor unfortunate 'friend'; Reg Lye, an Australian I think. Very funny. Old DE was a bit of a lad as well wasn't he, according to some newspaper reports - if you can believe them!

    Hi Sam,

We disagree where the TV series is concerned. However, I totally agree that the film has stood the test of time. There aren't many films I'll watch without a 5 year gap between viewings, but that is one of them. Cuffy.
