I have this vague memory of when I was a child possibly about 10 (so that would be in 1976) of seeing some film on TV from the 50s that had these robots in it that were basically big square silver boxes with cylindrical arms and legs. And the robots were walking down a village street (which makes me think it was a British film). I remember thinking how unconvincing the robots were and talking to school mates about it. Maybe my memory is all wrong but every now and again I think about this and wonder what the film was.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

This could easily be Devil Girl From Mars, or possibly even Old Mother Riley Meets the Vampire

Or almost any other 1950s SF film. That's how they did robots back then.
The walking down the village street is a bit unusual though

If you can remember anything else about it that would help identify it

1954's TARGET EARTH with Richard Denning?

He's wandering around an abandoned LA, only to stumble across a nice lady then another couple, none of whom realize that hordes of alien robots (well, we only see one at a time - budget restrictions and all - you understand) have conquered Earth.

Earth's victory is, of course, all because of this woman's piercing scream, shattering our cereal-box robot's oh-so-delicate cycloptian orb. (They travel all over space and can't find a bit o' glass stronger than that?!! Sheesh... just imagine what they'd do if they had to walk in Italian heels!)

This is an incredibly weak film, done without proper licenses according to the commentary track, and the outdoor LA street scenes are filmed around 5 a.m. so they didn't have to block off any of the non-existent-at-that-hour traffic, or run across cops that would shut them down for a reward from rival studios.

Denning had just returned from the Black Lagoon, by the way, and would leave the repopulation of LA within a couple of years for Manhattan, only to get dumped by Deborah Kerr and some Empire State Bldg romance. Heartbroken but handsome, he and Willis O'Brien head off to sunny central Mexico to have fun with a few black scorpions.

Village streets makes me think of THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING (1964) but the aliens in that weren't THAT clunky...

Hey guys thanks for the guesses.

It's not Devil Gril from Mars DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS - but I must say that the screen shot matches my description to a tee. So it was a fine guess. As is Old Mother Riley Meets the Vampire - that's a strong possibility but I don't remember it being a comedy.

Target Earth - No definitely not. But that led me to the PROOF : Podster's Robots Of Fiction so I'll ask the guy who runs that site. Thanks' guys.
