SYNOPSIS
an American writer and his girl friend came to Britain to live in an isolated castle in Wales (I think) so that he could finish the book that he was writing. Lots of mild (by today’s standards) horror happened and eventually she disappeared. At the end the author was telling the story to his publisher

I see that HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS (1983) was filmed in Hampshire.

Was a particular location there used as a "Welsh" mansion ?

Thanks, and to be honest I'm unsure as to the house used, but I have always loved this picture of the stars off duty.

Well, I saw the film again a few months back, but didn't know the location till I looked in this book - British Horror Film Locations by Derek Pykett, Freddie Francis, and Simon Flynn. Here is an extract from it:




I read elsewhere that the whole production was made at Rotherfield - interiors and exteriors - because there was little money left after paying all those film stars who were in it!

I caught that a few weeks ago on the telly near the end. The ending really did suck, seemed pretty good up to that point. Those kind of endings never work, it seems like they couldn't figure out how to end it.

There is this peculiar episode that was aired on One Step Beyond (it clearly wasn't produced for the series, no Newland narrating, different producing credits and music) about an American writer in London who met a mysterious woman named Lilith that was great until the crappy ending that is similar to House of the Dark Shadows.


I just looked up the One Step Beyond episode. Apparently the imbd information is false it aired as part of the original run and it was actually a rerun from a real old series they threw into the syndicated package:

Taking a midnight stroll on a London bridge, starving artist Ralph Terrance (Herbert Patterson) makes the acquaintance of a beautiful but strange young girl named Lilith (Gloria Saunders). Despite the girl's curiously fatalistic view of life, Ralph agrees to meet her again on several successive nights, just as Big Ben strikes 12. Slowly and inexorably, Ben is drawn into a life of crime by the predatory Lilith--who seems determined to live up to the reputation of her Biblical namesake, the legendary "storm demon" who destroyed everything she touched. Though included in the One Step Beyond syndication package, this episode was actually filmed for the earlier TV anthology Stars Over Hollywood, and was first telecast November 8, 1950. Any scene where Vincent Price calls Peter Cushing "a bitch" in such a catty way can't be all bad!

That version didn't have much to do with the novel except the ending.
