This may not be a British film - no idea - but welcome clues.
Hot, tired, cross family driving through France. Spoilt odious little girl whingeing continuously - I WANT to go back to the hotel with the pool, I WANT TO GO BACK, I WANT TO GO BACK!!! etc.
Exasperated father finally pulls car to side of road. While his head's turned the little girl takes the car keys from the ignition and calmly tosses them into a corn field.
'Sophie! (or whatever) - did you see where they landed?' Up and down nod.
'Tell daddy'. Side to side nod.
'Please Sophie, tell Daddy, just tell Daddy - Mummy's exhausted, your little brother's got earache...'
Side to side nod. Etc. Can't remember the denouement - probably back to the pool.
Thanks if anyone remembers this.

Well done, Euryale. I've just been reminded of the scene. Eleanor Bron and William Daniels with Gabrielle Middleton:
She didn't have a brother in the film. Apparently, this was Gabrielle's only screen appearance. Any relation to Guy or Noelle Middleton?

Fantastic - thanks so much...I asked the question at midnight, and got the answer when I woke up!
Afraid I 'remembered' every detail wrong, and my subconscious did a bit of screenwriting! It was terribly funny though, and Eleanor Bron's and William Daniels' faces are bringing it back to me. Almost sure I remember the little girl's mutinously pursed lips as she refuses to answer. I'd pictured her as being a bit older...the memory, my memory, sure does play tricks.
Thanks again Euryale for spotting this, and Cornershop for picture and details. Just watched Two for the Road again after all these years, and really glad to have this trip down memory lane. Slightly odd trip as I'd remembered it so patchily.
American family all excellent (as in the picture) and very funny - the progressively raised little Ruthie is often called Ruthiebelle!
Finney: "Do you still want a child?"
Audrey: "Yes. But not that child."
Fab movie. One of my all-time favourites.
