    Hi,

Can anyone assist? I would love to know the title of a film I saw years ago on TV, it was about a man who travelled to Germany to assassinate Hitler but was caught and tortured, finger nails were removed etc. he then returned to England (don't know how) and ended up living in an undergrounds den, two german agents searched for him and found his den but he killed one with fire poker shot from a sort of sling, can't recall the end, I thought it starred one of the Fox brothers but can't find it on any of their film lists.

    Thanks

Excellent thank-you, I wonder if it is available on dvd anywhere?

I was 11 in 1977 so quite a powerful film for my age group then.

It sure is available. The movie (at least in the US) has fallen into the public domain. You probably can watch it legally online.

Doesn't appear to be on the internet from the reliable sources, but many, many listings on ebay and Amazon at all sorts of prices. Finding a nice copy may be a problem.

The source book by Geoffrey Household is worth reading as well.

And the Fritz Lang movie from the forties with Walter Pidgeon is also pretty good.

Thanks all - the DVD is on order - Gone for a Polish subtitled version to get PAL rather than NTSC, hopefully the quality is OK.

Sorry, but what do you base that claim on? The film dates from 1977, so the initial 28 year copyright would have run to 2005, but before that date the period was bumped (with amendments) to 95 years. Rogue Male will not be public domain in the States until (at least) 2072.

Although the American studio-based rendition of a Tube station is rather dodgy....

Rogue Male was a made-for TV drama (1977) and the lead actor was Peter OToole. I recall him saying in an interview that he regards this as his finest work.

View it on Rogue Male (TV 1977) - IMDb

There are loopholes in the old copyright law that can make a movie public domain before the expiration date. The problem I think for this one I believe it was distributed in the United States prior to the change without the legally worded copyright notice on the print. If it is available to watch on the imdb that proves it is regarded as public domain in the U.S. Also all those cheap copies available from different sources.
