eighties film?

Ok I think this is an eighties film or very early 90's, a racing car driver crashes, his car is flipped up and hits a foot bridge over the circuit covered in adverts, im sure he wakes up in the back of a futuristic van which is attacked I think by rebels, its either then set in another dimension or the future, the people that took the racing driver can freeze time just before a car, plane crash etc take the people out and replace them, I hope Im not confusing more than one film here but anyone got any idea?
