some bloke having a nervous breakdown or the beginning of a mental ilness reads in the bible that you shouldnt worship any other god ....and beware of false prophets and such like .

then takes it out on the dog and starts beating it because dog is god backwards .
dont worry folks the camera cut away before any harm was done

I think this might well be Keep Smiling (1980) from the Play for Today series, and starring Stephen Moore and Morag Hood. Moore plays an 'ordinary Joe' who starts to believe that the 'powers that be' are after him, thinks his 'phone is bugged and so on. It turns out that he has paranoid schizophrenia - apparently the play was criticised by the British Medical Journal at the time.

He has a pet dog that he thinks is in league with the Devil, which suggests it may be the one you are looking for.
