Ransom (1974), starring Sean Connery?
A friend recalls a British film from the late 70s or early 80s in which the main character is a security specialist whose son is held ransom by some villains in return for his help breaking into a safe or secure area at an airport. The VHS box had a picture on the front of a plane
disappearing into the distance, with somebody on the ground either running after it or waving it goodbye.
Any help identifying this would be appreciated.

It wasn't "Ransom".
A lot of the film was shot in an abandoned warehouse or factory where both the security expert and his son were held whilst the former worked out the codes or whatever that were necessary to carry out the heist. This process took awhile, and some sort of almost friendly relationship between either the son (or his father or both) and the villains became established. In one scene, during the robbery, one of the villains got crushed in a lift somehow, and the security expert stayed to comfort him whilst he died.
The Black Windmill has a son kidnapped, but it doesn't have to do with airports. The whole movie is on youtube.
Sounds like it might be this:

Thanks, Euryale - my friend confirms it was Bellman and True.

Derek Newark was very good as the Gov'nor. I remember a scean where the gang are digging a tunnel and the Gov'nor is hurrying them along because a gang member has to leave early so as not to miss his bus home.
