Family lost in the snow

A father and son have to leave two younger children in the snow, while they go for help.
I remember that the weather is sow bad, they cannot return to the children until weeks later??

Fearing the worst, they are amazed to find them still alive???

I do remember a film like this where a family set out in a boat I think possibly along the West coast of Canada/Alaska and become shipwrecked due to bad weather.....
I think the father & son? manage to get to a larger island with a log cabin where there is a radio but cannot get it too work......?
In the spring or many weeks later they finally manage to get back to the other 2 children and are amazed to find them still alive, although suffering from frostbite....
I think the film was made in the 1980's.....but can't remember the title........

I just remembered they sailed out of Vancouver I think....
