I think the action then goes to Scotland where he lives in a remote cottage with his wife.

A man then joins them who is trying to leave the country. Previously I believe he was in London, I can see trains and a dead landlady.

Sounds like Eye of the Needle with Donald Sutherland.

Thanks, yes that is the one. What I did not say is that I am watching The Eagle Has Landed with Donald Sutherland which is what made me think of it.

I really liked the film, scary psychological tension and excellent character development, esp. of the Needle played by Sutherland. Christopher Cazenove was also good as the paralyzed pilot. One of those WW2 spy films I never mind seeing again.

A great film, have it on my shelf. I have watched Christopher Cazenove since he was in The Regiment years ago. Sad that he died so young only a few years ago. A really taut thriller, edge of seat stuff.
Eye Of The Needle, ken Follet isn't it? The Eagle has landed has a similar character. Irish agent working for the Nazi's. Same actor as well. Donald Sutherland.
