Film about a man held captive who eventually overpowers his opressor

I recently saw a trailer about this film where a guy (I think a robber) was keeping hostage a man (a black minister) and does all kind of wrong stuff, like torturing his daughter or using a lot of racial slurs). Eventually he is overpowered by the black man and killed. Film is from the 70s or 80s, maybe older.
What intrigued me was the fact the film was banned and cut several times, and only in more recent years the full version was available for viewing. I guess the subject was extremely controversial back then
