This is a very close suggestion. Yes, the beggining seems to tie up. The film is a collection of four short stories, I have been through this before, I have watched the trailer but it does not ring the bell, however memories have faded a lot, in order to recognise it I have to see the first part and towards the end. Perhaps you could send me a link.

I found another horror movie, and it is even from 1973, which starts with a police investigation with flashbacks , but it doesn't go back that far in time. It stays contemporary. Watched it a little on youtube, doesn't have anything like the described ending.

The Pyx...

I watched the first part of the Pyx but there is no need to watch further because there is no connection. It is not exactly a detective plot investigating the murder of one particular person in modern times but a mystery puzzle investigation about people dying in a set up which is is rather supernatural. No big actors like Christopher Plummer were involved, it was jus a small film. Thanks for looking.
