Man with no fingers?

Another long shot, i think it may be a french film or be based in france. It was black and white and involved either breaking out of prison or in to a bank. The main character had no fingers on one hand. It involved digging a tunnel out of prison or digging into a bank. It was vary moody and a lot of the dialog was spoken quietly i can remember that they got caught in the end. I would say it was either made in 50s/60s but not sure. What realy sticks in my mind is the man with no fingers. Some details may be wrong because its year sinse i saw it but its been on the tv more than once. Last saw it 80s/90s good luck with this one thankyou.
