I think John Mills is the captain. Early 1950s, unless I dreamt it.

Must admit that Morning Departure is one of my favourite films, deserves to be more widely known .

Sadly since the demise of DDHE not commerically available as a Region 2 release here although it has just been released in Region 1 land.

Shame DDHE went out of business. I bought that release but found the quality was inferior to the VHS recording I made in the late 80's from C4

Maybe that's one reason why they went out of business, if they released poor quality recordings too often.

I only ever bought a few things from them, and the quality on those was fine

And this is what I might mean by films that reflect realism with great art. The story line contains the assortment of characters, the unpredictability of life, all within a detailed educational informative view about that life - and death - within a submarine. No great heroes, just ordinary types doing their best - British culture in fact.

We just received the Region-1 release and it's done very well, although there are no bonus features. The movie's enough. Hardy Kruger in THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY finally made it, and the R-1 release of CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE replaces R-2's copies now. DRM is going to be a total pain, I can see.

Hi.
I rember as a little boy, must have just before I moved to Hemel Hempstead, Morning Departure was shown at The Highbury Cinema in Holloway Road. In the foyer there was an added attraction of a life size dimmy wearing a diving suit. Remember, I was of short trouser age at the time. I went to see the film with my parents and before going in, I jokingly, shook hands with the 'diver' and said hello to it. What I really did not know at the time, was that the town where I was about to move to, Hemel Hempstead, was where one of the film's co stars, James Hayter, lived or was about to live.
But oddly enough, I recently learned that Morning Departure, was also a play on post war 1940's television.
Another piece of useless information from my memory bank.
