Default Unanswered: Edwardian ghost story

Hello there - does anyone know the title of a film I saw about 12 years ago on BBC2, late at night? It was a ghost story set in Edwardian England. The setting was a country house and a family with maybe two daughters. One was an actress (frowned upon by the parents) who spent some of her nights smoking opium on the verandah. The plot also involved an older photograph of relatives with one mystery man in who seemed to appear to the sister as a silent ghost at some point. I can't remember much more as I had come back from the pub and couldn't watch much of it. It was very haunting and I'd love to know what it was! Oh, and some of the soundtrack was Leos Janacek's Tara Bulba (a favourite of mine too.) If anyone can help - please drop a line.
Simon

It sounds like the series that BBC2 ran at Christmas with M.R. James ghost stories. It would be worth checking this out and even trying the BBC archive site.

Yes, I do believe it was M.R James, he wrote Edwardian ghost stories.

Could be wrong, but sounds like one of his.

Could it be GHOST STORY with Marianne Faithfull? The opium smoking sounds about right for her! I don't think you'd find that in a BBC MR James adaptation.
