Default Night Must Fall *solved*

Hi, This is my second question to the forum. Thanks for the answer to the first ? re: A Matter of WHO.

Question: Does anybody remember this one (silly question)? A young man comes to a country house in England driving a scooter with a hat box on the back.. I think he comes to work on the property. He gets a room in the house. He keeps the mysterious hat box on top of an armoire in his bedroom. (u know what's in the box, don't u?). There is a pretty young woman who lives in the house. The man starts an attack upon her. She spends a very tense night talking him down. The man has killed someone and the police search for the body in a small lake.
I could swear that Susan York plays the actress and Albert Finney the killer. But maybe wrong.
I thought the title was something like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning but that's a different film. Or the Morning After the Night Before. Something like that.
It was done in the late 50s or 60s. Black and White. Very tense film.
Can anyone remember the title? Thanks, Tim

"Night Must Fall" 1964 directed by Karel Reisz and it is indeed Albert Finney. Susan Hampshire also appears.

christoph404: Thanks for coming up with "Night Must Fall". A great flick, as I recall. I'll have to check it out again.

Definitely Susan Hampshire, not Susannah York, I remember it scared the **** out of me when I saw it in the 60's.

The 30s Hollywood version is also well worth seeing -- the two films are very different but intersect.

A mention also for Emlyn Williams the author. Almost forgotten today, he was an actor, author, playwrite and director: probably best remember nowadays for "Beyond Belief" his chilling account of the Moors Murders.
