Yes sounds like Bitter Moon although I thought he ( played by Peter Coyote) was hit by a car. She was French. The film was largely in flashbacks with him in a wheelchair relating his story on a ship to the guy ( played by Hugh Grant in one of his better roles) who was one half of a couple ( the other was Kristin Scott Thomas) they had befriended. A great film made circa 1992 but with a bit of a 60s feel to the early part of the film.
In the 1977 film "the man who loved women" the lead character was knocked down by a car as he crossed the road to eye up a woman who had taken his fancy. But it sounds far more like Bitter Moon.
"I've agreed with you from the first about the danger. But now I think you are utterly mistaken".
