Default Looking for Several Brit Flicks

I'm looking for help in identifying several (possibly) British movies that people have been asking about at another site. I've been drawing a complete blank on these!

1) "a move that was made in the 90s, I think, that's when I saw it. It was about a British/Scottish girl whose father dies. Takes the death hard, goes to his cloest to touch his clothes, puts on his jackets, has visions of him. She's bullied at school. One scene has her walking into the classroom and all the students are chanting "you stink, you stink". The main character is a bit plain looking, long brown hair. Her bully is blonde, comes from a broken home. They have a fight scene near the end of the move at the cemetary and the brown haired girl throws the blonde into an open grave."

2) "im looking for a british film made in the 70s or early 80s the scene i remember is a man getting beat up with weapons they kneecap him and leave him for dead. he manages to get help and sits in a pub waiting for the men to return, his knees are bleeding through his clothes. he seeks revenge on them all"

3) "The film I am searching for is a B/W film made in the 1950s. It is set in an English village, as the people leave a cottage, a Man notices that they leave no shadows. This could be an American film or a British film. I last saw this film on television in 1958."

Just could be The Halfway House (1944) ...and if it isn't the one you seek, it's a very good film and well worth finding.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

2) I remember this film. I might have been a made for TV film. I think it was about Jimmy Boyle, the Glasgow criminal turned artist. Can't remember the name of it but it wasn't The Debt Collector which was also based on him.

That's quite brilliant--it sounds exactly like what the original inquirer was looking for. Thanks!

Since the previous round worked out so well, I am hoping that folks will be able to ID some of these as well:

1) "I have been desperately searching for an animated film, more than likely British and which I believe was a half-hour long, which was aired on WLIW-TV, a PBS station from Long Island, New York, about ten years ago (so 1998 or so) on Christmas Eve, before "Bernard and the Genie" at about 11pm or 12am. It seemed to be made in at least the 1980s and certainly wasn't a Disney or Warner Brothers product. I had thought the title was "The Maypole Cat," but an Internet search didn't reveal anything with that title. As I remember, it was about a cat in a lighthouse, I think set during the Christmas season."

2) "mystery movie that I saw in the mid-1960s on television. It was black-and-white, made in late '40s or early '50s, possibly British.A murder is solved when the victim's home movie camera is discovered -- the film inside shows the murderer approaching the victim and pushing her off a cliff."

3) "I am looking for a British film made in 70/80's. It concerns a young girl's attempts to find about medical experiments carried out during the war (on soldiers?). She enlists the help of an older man, who embark upon the search for clues. The clues themselves are hidden in strange places. The only clue location I can remember was at the end of a film about 'The History of the English Hedgerow'."

4) "I saw a movie promo many years ago and meant to send my husband to see it.In the promo, a British actor (I thought it was Sean Connery--but I've searched his IMDB and the role doesn't seem to be there) is seen addressing the sailors assembled on the deck of his ship. The British have just declared war on Germany, or perhaps Germany declared it on them. But, the captain tells his men that he has just sent a telegram to Germany stating that the "Ship's name" and crew are ready for them. This elicits a cheer.Okay, that's all I know. I wanted to send my husband to see it because he likes that kind of film, but I don't think that it ever played nearby. This was long ago--if memory serves it was 1979-1983. I thought that it was based on a real figure, and I thought that the figure might be Montbatten. But, again, I cannot find anything about a biographical film of Montbatten."

Number 3 is Stephen Poliakoff's Hidden City. The link I've given you here includes a couple of clips - including The Hedgerows of England.

I haven't seen it for years, but I remember really liking it and it's a film that's often asked about on film forums, so it obviously sticks in the mind.

Awesome! Thank you so much. I've been thinking for weeks that the original poster's question reminds me of 1987's Ground Zero from Australia. I wonder if this one is as good?

You're very welcome. It's not often that I manage to answer a question on here so you're made me feel good about myself!

I used to work just round the corner from where the scenes in the underground film store were filmed so can't really ever forget the film. Plus I'm a big fan of Poliakoff's work.

I hadn't heard of Ground Zero but it looks interesting from the synopsis - one to look out for.

Another film on a kind of similar theme is Prague which I also remember liking, but don't remember all that much about.

A more mainstream similar one is Mulholland Falls.

I do like a good conspiracy thriller, but I'm not paraniod - honest!

I picked up my copy of 'Hidden City' on NTSC Video from eBay USA so it might be worth looking there.

No 1: could be THE MOUSEHOLE CAT - a great little animation based on the book set in Cornwall.

The Mousehole Cat (1994) (TV)

Pronounced Mowz'll so it would be quite hard to track down if you hadn't seen the credits! Home of stargazy pie!

Hi ,
I think number 2 was not a film, but a BBC or ITV play about the infamous Scottish "hard man"
Jimmy Boyle. He was from Glasgow,a right 'heedcase'!. He's now reformed and does a bit of art .
