Default Another Grab Bag Request

Well, my last stack of assorted requests went pretty well, so I'm gonna try again. These are from various people at another "What was that movie?" site.

1) "Ladies and gentlemen,I was born in 1973 so it must have been the late 1970s or early 1980s when I saw a childrens' movie on TV in Germany which impressed me very much. It was a foreign colour film - with real characters, not animated - about a little girl whose family moved into a big old house (looked like an English mansion) nearby a river with a nice park around. In the house (was it in one of the rooms or in the attic?) she just happened to meet the ghost of a young girl that drowned in exactly that river in the past. The two built up an eerie and distastrous kind of friendship. The ghost looked quite angelic but indeed was very mean, selfish and destructive. She wanted to make sure that the living girl - a very friendly and innocently trusting kid without the ability to assert herself - would have a deathly accident, so that she had a ghost friend who would never leave her. The film went on with the living girl (either alone or together with her family although I can't remember that they could also see the ghost) doing some research about the dead one. In the end an attempted murder of the living girl failed thanks to the knwoledge about the ghost who was powerless thereafter (don't know if she eventually vanished). The movie seemed quite British and had a quite contemporary feel to me, but maybe I'm wrong with hindsight. The ghost girl had some kind of old-fashioned name like Alice or so."

2) "I saw this on daytime tv in the UK about a year ago (2006). I think it was filmed in the mid 90s. It was suitable for family viewing or a young audience. All i remember is that it was about a boy, approx age 15, who goes to live with relatives...maybe his grandfather? I think the boy had blonde hair. The film involved something supernatural like ghosts or time travel. It was kind of similar to Tom's Midnight Garden so i might be confusing the two. I think it was a British film or possibly Australian. And i think the boy wore a baggy white t-shirt for most of it. I seem to remember it had the name of the house in the title eg 'The Haunting of something Manor' or something like that."

3) "This is a British film from the 70's or 80's which I saw in the late 70's / early 80's on English TV. So there is a possibility it could have been made for TV. Plot as far as I can remember is as follows. Several couples, maybe 10 people in total, meet up at a large house / mansion in the English country for a weekend break / week's holiday. I think they would all be in their late 20's, early 30's. It is summertime. Film starts off with them meeting up at the house, getting to know each other, exploring the house, exploring the local countryside (I'm sure there's a stream that flows close to them), having meals, etc, etc. All fairly idyllic stuff. However, things then start to get darker. I'm sure one of the women is convinced that someone comes into her room at night. Some of the others are sympathetic to her, some not so. Anyway, the suspense continues in this vein until it eventually becomes evident that the house is being 'stalked' by a doll that comes to life."

4) "Many years ago, I watched a film about a poor elderly couple (British I think)who were being evicted from their home (I think). As far as I can remember, they kept going to an art gallery and staring at one paricular painting of a cottage in the countryside. The end of the film focused on the painting...and there was smoke coming from the chimney. I seem to think Barbara Mullen starred in it, but I can't swear to it! It was a lovely bitter/sweet film."

5) "I remember the following - a movie that was on PBS when I was a kid, it seemed to have a British appearance to it, possibly made in the early 80s or late 70s. It was about a girl and a boy maybe, in the 1940s perhaps, but the girl lived in this house and there was this older ghost, who I think became her friend in the end. The ending scene is of the girl and the ghost swinging on a beach or sandy area and she gets off and the ghost dissapears but the swing continues to swing and she says something like "Even though I can't see you, I still know you're there." I also remember something involving a mirror and the ghost or a closet where he appears and scares the girl or someone else.I have been searching for any evidence of this movie for a decade. Any I'd be incredibly thankful for any clue you could provide."

Hi

I think number 4 could be the 1955 British horror/supernatural film 'Three Cases of Murder' starring Orson Welles & John Gregson. The film is made up of three stories & one is about an art gallery & the life behind the paintings.
