Question A thriller from 70's or 80's. Man hides in a burrow from baddies

Hello Everybody, I'm currently transferring all my VHS collection to CD, my main interests are comedy and thrillers.

Anyway, for some reason, my mind went back decades ago when I vaguely remembered what I am quite sure is a British film. I remember really enjoying it but can't for the life of me remember tha main Actor or the title.

I think it's set before the outbreak of war but not positive. I think the main Actor might be Irish.

The plot is that this man knows that some bad men are going to come looking for him. He or the baddies might be spies. He prepares himself by either digging or taking over something like a fox burrow in the English countryside. Sure enough the baddies (possibly three of them or thereabouts) find his hideout and proceed to force him out. I think he shoots one of them in the face/head when a baddy puts his head down a hole.

That's about all I know other than assuming that as he is a good guy he defeats his enemies in the end.

Any answers would be very much appreciated, either here or by email, regards,

Ian aka smiler03

Sounds like Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household, starring Peter O'Toole. It was Alastair Sims' penultimate performance.

Rogue Male (1976) (TV)

It has also been filmed by Fritz Lang as Man Hunt, starring Walter Pidgeon, George Sanders and Roddy McDowall.

Man Hunt (1941)

Superb film IMHO. Not sure whether it is still available, other than second hand?

The copy I have is pretty rough.

The lovely Cyd Hayman is featured too.

I can thoroughly recommend the book

"Well I said goodbye to Rosie Rook this morning"

The DVD I have is a very poor VHS transfer. It is still available really cheap, but I suspect the quality is much the same as the one I bought a few years back.

Amazon.co.uk: Rogue Male [1976]: Cyd Hayman, Hugh... Amazon.co.uk: Rogue Male [1976]: Cyd Hayman, Hugh...
