Can anyone help me with the title or lead actors name in this British film ?

Movie was about an actor joining seaside theatre groups, but always moves on after one season. He is portrayed as a loner.

I thought it was Jeremy Irons but his bio does not include such a movie.
1987-1991 period I think. Cannot remember the full plot.
Any help appreciated.

Definitely a film? It sounds rather like Lost Empires. Period or modern?

ETA - I think A Pemberton is right. Chorus of Disapproval actually ends with Irons at the station practising for his next amateur gig - The Merry Widow.
