Hi

perhaps someone can help me identify this film - I watched it as a child (1960's) when it seemed to be shown regularly in the afternoon.

There's a cute little girl, an old tramp who sounds and looks a bit like Robert Newton as Long John Silver, but obviously without the pirate costume, or Frankie's dad from 'Please Sir!" and a stiff upper lip proper English gent in a rural setting. The dirty old tramp say's "I'm going to cut yer liver out and spread it all around" whilst brandishing a knife.

In another scene the English gent is talking to the child who is obviously friendly with the tramp. The gent is leaning on a fence, the child is sitting on the gate and she says "Next week he's going to teach me how to spit".

That's all I can remember.

Many thanks

Sounds like 'The History of Mr Polly' with Finlay Currie as the tramp and Juliet Mills as the little girl.

Thankyou for the speedy reply. I've just read the synopsis of "The History of Mr Polly", which was made in 1949, and it does indeed seem to be the film I remember.

Perhaps it may have an outing on tv again soon, since the sad loss of John Mills is bound to bring forth a showing of some of his films.

Thanks again.

Incidentally the wonderful Megs Jenkins is also in the film.

Definitely The History of Mr Polly with Juliet Mills as Little Polly and John Mills as Alfred Polly. They showed the clip where Hayley was saying she's going to be taught how to swear & spit as part of the tribute to John Mills.
