THE PLOT OF THE FILM IS ON AN ISLAND. THE OWNER OF THE ISLAND TAKES AWAY THE NAVIGATION AIDS (TURNS OUT LIGHTHOUSE LIGHTS?) SHIPS CRASH ONTO THE ISLAND AND ANY SURVIVORS ARE TOLD IF, AFTER (AN HOUR?) START THEY CAN REACH THE OTHER END OF THE ISLAND WITHOUT BEING CAUGHT THEY WILL BE ALLOWED TO LIVE.

Sounds like "The Hounds of Zaroff" (1932) (aka. The Most Dangerous Game) with Leslie Banks, Joel McRea and Fay Wray. Story was refilmed in 1956 as "Run for the sun" with Richard Widmark and Jane Greer.
