Answered: Thermoc (1972) *solved*

I saw this French flick years ago, so much of the detail I've forgotten. However, I do remember that the hero of the movie gradually, as the movie progressed, tuned reality out, until at the end of the film he is living a completely soliptic existence. There is no sound at the end of the film, symbolising the man's complete detachment from the world around him. I think it was a New Wave movie from the '60s and may have been in black and white.

I think that the film you have in mind is THEMROC directed by Claude Faraldo in 1972. It is about a factory worker (Michel Piccoli) who cracks up and turns his bedroom into a cave and uses grunts instead of speaking.
