Default Answered: Schalken the Painter *solved*

This is an image ive had in my head for around 20 years and have no idea what the film was or what the plot was!!

Set in Cromwellian England- a girl is married off to a rather scary looking guy in a big hat as the parents want the money that is being offered. They dont see their daughter again for a number of years but then one night she appears at their door in a sorry state screaming and crying to be saved from him. He is rather scary looking guy like the quaker in Poltergeist.

Im sure it was in colour.

It's the Omnibus episode SCHALCKEN THE PAINTER ( Leslie Megahey 1979) starring Jeremy Clyde, Maurice Denham, John Justin, Anthony Sharp and Cheryl Kennedy among others. Justin is the scary toff in the big hat, who turns out to be a living corpse who takes his new bride to live with him in his Rotterdam graveyard!! Kennedy is the bride, and Denham her uncle, who signs the contract. Scary, beautifully filmed, and one of the last genuine pieces of televisual art. A masterpiece (or 'mantelpiece' as we say on the BHF)

It doesn't sound right, but given your description Witchfinder General (1968) comes to mind...though it's a long shot

Thanks for info though i dont think it was Blood on Stans Claw.

I think the film may take place over a number of years as when the old guy in the hat takes away the daughter the parents only realise they wont see her again over a long period of time.
When she escapes- a numbers of months or years later- the old guy comes round to the house for her- he looks goulish- and shes obviously beside herself in terror.... the parents are powerless to stop him taking her again as it was a legally binding agreement......

thats it- all i can remember.
Anything spring to mind?

Default Schalken the Painter

I would really like to see this again. I have bought Whistle and I'll Come and A Warning to the Curious from the BFI but have waited for a release of this one in vain. The annual Christmas Ghost Story airing has also failed to include it. If anyone does have a decent copy I'd be very grateful. Please let me know.

Thanks

Chris
