Apologies in advance as this may well have been a one-off TV drama rather than a film, but I can't remember now.

It was set during the First World War at a rural British hospital for wounded soldiers. The lead character was a (Scottish?) soldier called Jed I think, and he had one of his legs amputated. Apart from that, all I really can remember is him going round the grounds in a wheelchair or on crutches and that he got involved with one of the nurses. It made a great impression on me at the time (I think I was about 8) but for the life of me I can't remember why!

I saw it on TV so it was either a TV drama from late 80s/early 90s, or a film made earlier in the 80s (maybe late 70s). Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Have you tried logging on to the IMDb web site and typing in 'JED' under 'Characters' One of the titles may strike a cord. Be warned, about 150 films had a character in the cast with this name!!!!!!!

Have done that thanks Rennie but none of them looked like the thing I'm thinking of - as I say I'm not 100% convinced his name was Jed but that's how I've remembered it...

I saw this as well. It was definitely a TV play from about 10 years ago. I also remember seeing previews for the play between programmes & this makes me think it was BBC.
The part of the soldier was played by a young Scottish actor who, I believe, was an actual amputee.
The nurse was played by a young actress who was fairly well known for her other TV appearances but I'm afraid I just can't remember who she is !
She may have been in one of the 'soaps' around this time. I remember thinking that the role of the nurse seemed to be a fairly unusual part for her to play, but that she played the part very well.
The nurse was upper Middle Class & the soldier Working Class, so as this was 1914-18 period there was a bit of a 'doomed romance' feel to the play.
The name Jed does sound familiar.
I'll keep racking my brains for the name of the actress. It'll come back to me eventually...I hope!

If I had a swimming pool, it would probably burn down . . .

Yes! Thank you sippog! Did a search and only really found this description on 'Memorable TV' site:

CHANGING STEP

BBC Scotland / 1x90m-e / 1990

Writer: Antony Sher / Director: Richard Wilson

Period drama. During World War One an amputee convalescing at a British home falls in love with a nurse.

With:- JAMES CONVEY / SUSAN WOOLDRIDGE / ANTONY SHER

Exactly the right storyline, film length, BBC Scotland so would have had the Scottish character, and from 1990 so I would have been 8 as I thought I was! This has to be it - so thanks! Probably not going to be able to ever see it again to truly confirm it...but I'm convinced this is it.
