Sounds like " Background to Danger " or The Mask of Dimitrios ", based on the Eric Ambler novels, "Background to Danger" and "The Coffin for Dimitrios."

Sorry chaps it's not "The Man Who Never Was"
which is one of my favourite films. It's so maddening, as it was only on TV about 5 months ago. It was definitely British, b/w. There was a scene where two cars were travelling through the streets of London en route to where the German agent was. The second car flashed the first car and they both came to a halt and there was a scene where they discussed letting the agent go so as not to compromise an operation. |

ZZ,
Can't remember exact scene, but that sounds like "Background to Danger." Anyone, please set me right if I'm wrong. BTW, if you like the genre, I would recommend the novels of Eric Ambler, who wrote the aforementioned. They are not Dickensian in length and are well written for suspense and fast pace. Gibbie |

It wasn't "The Man Who Never Was" - I think I know the film you mean, don't know the title though.
It wasn't spies though - it was drug smugglers??? There was a scene at a left luggage department at London Railway station if I remember rightly? |

I feel sure that the film was FORBIDDEN CARGO (1954), shown on Channel 4 in the afternoon a few months back. As I remember the scene described, some customs officers are in a car chasing another car driven by a smuggler through the streets of London at night. The customs officers are pulled up for speeding by the police in a patrol car. By the time the customs officers have explained to the police who they are and why they were speeding, it’s too late. The smuggler has got clean away.
