The Wild and the Willing (1962).
Debut film for John Hurt, Ian McShane and Samantha Eggar. Shot on location in Lincoln.
Does anyone remember a film from the early 60s I should think. It was set at a university and one of the students was a 'working class' lad, made good by getting a place in the uni.
The stunt was one of those silly student 'end of term/graduation' pranks that went horribly wrong. The task was to climb one of the spires and place on top of the spire a chamber pot, but this chap fell from the spire and was killed.
I'm sure it was black and white though.
Anyone know it?![]()

Rex Harrison climbs the spire at university in "THE RAKES PROGRESS" 1945. Watched by the great Guy Middleton as Fogroy, "up the navy".

Hi all.
My father was in The Mike Cottton Jazzmen who appeared in the Jazz club scene. I have never seen the film or even knew about it untill my sister found some old papers after our mother died.
The Wild & the Willing was a Betty Box and Ralph Thomas production filmed in Lincoln in the early 60's I played in the Jazz Band on the float which traveled through the City and was an extra. At the time the film was made I was employed with a local firm of Architects who were employed to design a new tower on top of the existing tower which John Hurt fell. I prepared the drawings. I got to know Ian McShane, Jonny Briggs quite well, this was Ian's first film when he left RADA. At that time I was playing at a local Jazz club in Lincoln and sometimes played at the Girls Teacher Training College. Had many a good evening there even went out with a few of the Ladies. I remember Sammath Eggar in her white MGA with frequent visits from Albert Finny.
I also played with the Mike Cotton Jazzmen one evening.
Lots of people I regognised from my old Lincoln days. 46 years ago.
Hi i have never seen this film before, i was born in Lincoln in August 1961 & my dad said that he saw them filming on Broadgate as he was driving past in his work van.
The parts filmed in the pub well that is my local now, Ye Olde Crowne right in the centre of town, where they actually come out of the pub is actually up the hill & is a good 5 mins walk down the hill to the actual pub itself, , not a brilliant film by all means, but it was filmed here & that will do for me![]()
