My mother remembers seeing a film years ago about a woman living in rural southern Ireland that falls pregnant. The father (wanting nothing to do with her) leaves for America. She, being viewed as a scarlet woman, has the child and after a while, leaves the child in the care of nuns at a convent school, and leaves for England to seek work and a better life.
