Powell and Pressburger's A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (GB 1946)
Only the best film ever made (IMVHO) :)
One odd thing to note - he never actually goes to heaven - only part way up the stairway. Also, it is only called heaven in the little scene with Richard Attenborough (and the response to his comment).
See PaPAS web site for lots more information & reviews</div><div class='quotemain'> This is the story of two worlds, the one we know and another which exists only in the mind of a young airman whose life and imagination have been violently shaped by war.
Any resemblance to any other world, known or unknown, is purely coincidental. [/b]
cheers all, it's been bugging me for years
The film you're thinking of is called 'A Matter of Life and Death' Directed by Michael Powell.</div><div class='quotemain'>curly:

It was "Written, Produced and Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger". MIchael may have doen more of the directing and Emeric more of the writing but it was a true collaboration and they really meant that joint credit for everything.
Hi and thanks in advance

Yes, that was what I thought until I saw the reference was to a black and white movie. "Matter of Life and Death" was only partly black and white. "Here Comes Mr.Jordan" was all black and white.

Try "A Matter of Life and Death", a Powell/Pressburger film which seems to meet your description. Only part of it was in black and white though

If it is A Matter of Life and Death (my personal favourite), it's strange the things some people remember from it.
It is, as the others have said, only partly in B&W, much of it was in glorious Technicolor.
It isn't a comedy although there are many moments of humour in it.
The hero jumps from his burning bomber without a parachute to certain death - but we don't see him falling.
Although he's an RAF bomber pilot on his way back from a raid, it's not a "war film" in that we never see any fighting.

Hello Members, This is my first post, so hello there!
I feel certain somebody at this site knows the details of a film I saw years ago and am now trying to trace.
Title: A Question of Who (as I recall). I think Alistair Sims played the lead--but I could be wrong. Maybe not Sims.
It was a film about an expert with the World Health Organization. He worked in a musty office in London (with tea pots and cups, etc.). From this office he carried on a World Wide hunt for a missing bacteria or virus.
If anybody can confirm the title and perhaps give a bit of info about how to locate the film, I will be very grateful. thanks

It was Terry-Thomas, not Alastair Sim
A Matter of WHO (1961)

Thanks Steve.
I saw this film too, when it was first released. Terry Thomas is great with his trusty umbrella!
It's been mentioned on these forums before, in the past 8 months... if you search for the thread there might be some info. on how to locate a copy.
