this film was made in the early 70s id say, its about some pub team up north, and most of the film is set on the pitch, with some characters all chatting on the side lines, one scene is the goalie having a heart to heart during the game with his bird, any ideas?

Sounds very much like it to me. Especially the part about the goalie having a heart to heart during the game with his bird.
