    Here's a toughie.

A pub in Newcastle (I think) was featured. Most characters were women and it was quite comical. Maybe it took place in the Thatcher recession. Something ghostly happened but possibly late in the movie.

Pub? Newcastle? Women? No - it'll never catch on.

40 odd views and no offers? Ha, I thought it would be too tough.:

I wonder if it's TV. There were so few British films being made in the Thatcher era it would be surprising if this one had escaped everybody's notice. It certainly rings no bells with me.

It could have been a C4 movie.

There's only one other thing I recall...somebody trying to sell a radio or something they stole.

The language was pretty coarse as I recall too.

I wonder, could there have been a character in it who turned out to be a ghost?

Could this be Dream On? A 1991 film set in North Shields (near Newcastle) about the struggles of a group of female characters. A lot of the action takes place in a pub, and one of the characters sems to imagine the ghost of a dapper Irishman. Ringing any bells?

If so, this is a film by the Newcastle-based Amber Film Collective, and would have been shown on Channel Four.

Not much about it at the IMDB, but some info at Amber's website.

By jove I think that's it. The title rings no bells at all, which is odd given that was the name of an excellent TV series too.

I looked at the Amber site and I'm sure that's it. Thanks very much.

Ironically I have it somewhere in my VHS collection - which I'm unable to play since I moved to Canada. Every time I get close to buying the necessary equipment, something happens to put it off.

But soon I hope to be able to do something about it.

Just a note to say that we've begun the process of digitising the Amber back catalogue and we hope to bring out a DVD of 'Dream On' (1991) at some point over the next two or three years. The pub, which Amber bought as a base for its five year residency in North Shields, makes an appearance in 'T Dan Smith' (1987) and other work from this period. 'In Fading Light' (1989), the film set in the North Shields fishing industry (for which Amber bought and ran a fishing boat for a couple of years) is available on DVD. Amber Online
