Footsteps (1974) *solved*

please can you help with the following programme my memory is a bit hazy but the plot went something like this,two girls share a flat and an old man who seems very helpful lives downstairs.there are a series of murders and the only clues are that the murder has a limp and his shoes make a loud squeaking noise.it ends where one of the girls hears the squeaking noise coming towards her room looks up and you've guessed it its the old man from downstairs.been bothering me for years this one!

p.s this is definitely a british programme.

Hi - I think it could be the short film from 1974 entitled 'Footsteps', it was directed by Alan Parker & starred Gemma Jones.
