I saw this film on tv in the late seventies, it was in colour from the mid sixties and was a sort of caper movie and I think it was set in London. I cant really remember any of the actors, though they were british. The main character is seen breaking into a printing press company that prints playing cards for major casinos and he marks the printing plates and is then able to read the backs of the playing cards by using a special pair of spectacles. he gets involved in a life or death card game with a james bond type villain and is doing quite well until the Casino produces some old stock of playing cards that have not been marked so he has to play out the game for real without cheating. I remember it all being quite tense but I cant remember how it all ends! Also it was on so late at night that I think I fell asleep before the end but I remember enjoying it and have always wanted to try and catch it again!!

    Why limit yourself to DVD?

You should be able to get a perfectly decent VHS version from Amazon.com

It will be NTSC but British VCRs have been playing this format for some time now.

Currently (on the link above) there are copies for a little over $6 and the postal costs make it about $12...current exchange makes that about £6. You need to select one that says International Shipping.

Don't be concerned about 2nd hand if it's something you really want to see. I've ordered in excess of 30 tapes in the last couple of months. Tape quality has been excellent EVERY time. Sometimes the tape is actually new and many are on offer for under a $...sometimes just a cent!!!

cheers, I buy several DVDs per week via amazon, often region 1 titles that are not available in the uk, im guessing like me you all have multi region DVD players.I cant remember the last time I watched a video tape, I find the difference in quality between DVD and tape to be huge, my tv screen is quite large so the difference is magnified! I guess I have abandoned video and tend to wait until titles come out on DVD. It now seems DVD is being replaced with blue ray....where will it all end! cheers for the advice though, I did have a look and saw the video on amazon, Im hoping it will be on DVD so will hang ob cos Im stubborn like that!

I don't have multi equipment yet. I have loads of UK VHS here with me that I can't watch. It's annoying that 'standard' UK VCRs play the US formats but US doesn't play UK formats.

Until I can get the multi equipment needed, my compromise has been in buying US VHS tapes (of things I already have - UK version) on the cheap (and in some cases DVDs) from Amazon's US and Canadian sites.

It might become such a compromise that by the time I do get the necessary stuff, I might have obtained duplicates for a lot of my recordings

Just realised you are in North America! Its quite easy and very cheap to buy a multi region DVD player here in the UK, I bought a superb sony player for £59.00 which is a little less than 100 us dollars. If you are replacing UK videos with versions you can watch on north american equipment wouldn't it be as well to replace them with DVD? a bit more expensive perhaps but there are often extra features on DVD such as cast and crew interviews and commentaries by directors

etc. I think my wife is happier that I am collecting DVDs now and not filling the lounge of our house with stacks and stacks of video boxes!! My old video collection is consigned to the attic and the rafters are creaking with the strain! My DVD library is probably 5 times larger than my video library was but takes up a lot less space especially if you remove the discs from original boxes and keep them in a wallet type flip book as people tend to do with music CDs, it means you can store 40 or 50 DVDs in a flip wallet the size of one video cassette box, so I guess that is an aspect that is important for me as I seem to have become addicted to trawling the pages of Amazon most evenings and buying my movies using the one click button!! there is always one more movie out there that you feel you ought to have!

I have hundreds of tapes, most have two or three movies on them - many not available commercially - and many I have already edited out the commercials. I have Spitting Images, Reggie Perrins, Singing Detective, Pennies From Heaven, Beiderbeckes and loads loads more.

Transferring to DVD will cost literally thousands of pounds even if I didn't transfer everything. The equipment needed to view them is about £300. I'l get it soon.

Had I brought North American format VHS to the UK, a £60 VCR would have been enough to view the collection.

Here, I can buy a decent DVD player for £12.50...VCR for £23...DVD/VCR combo for £35....all brand new. But none will play UK VHS in the same way UK VCRs will play US VHS.

This film is available in Region 2. It is a German release in anamorphic widescreen entitled "Der Gentleman Zinker". The German subtitles can be removed. It is available at Amazon Germany for 15 euros plus p&p.

    Cheers, John
