I am trying to find the name of a black and white WW2 movie which was about a rescue of 5 airmen from Kos. The rescue was by submarine and part of the plot was that the submarine had to return on 10 consecutive nights to rescue the airmen. Can anyone help?

Sounds a little like the Dirk Bogarde film from 1954 They Who Dare. But that's about a group of SAS and Greek soldiers who go to blow up Italian airfields on Rhodos. And it's in colour.

Or there's Ill Met by Moonlight by Powell and Pressburger, again with Dirk. This is in monochrome and is a version of the real capture of General Kreipe of the Fallschirmjäger on Kriti by the British and Greek partisans.

It also smacks of Destination Tokyo where the sub comes back each night for the team they've dropped off to spy on Tokyo harbour. Is it definitely a British film? B&W?

Yes. it is a British film. The interest is because it was a true story and my father in law, now deceased, was one of the five airmen. My husband caught the film on daytime TV some years ago but cannot remmeber the title. I am trying to surprise him with a copy. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

I like submarine movies so I hope someone can name it! Now I'm intrigued. As it is a true story could it be a documentary rather than a feature film?

No it was definitely a film rather than a documentary. I was hoping it was going to be Ill met by moonlight as someone suggested but that is set on Crete and not Kos. I am still keeping my fingers crossed someone will know. A fan of Sid James are you?

And there are no submarines in Ill Met by Moonlight. They're landed from, and picked up by an MTB.

The description of the book it was based on, written by George Barr, talks about an American sergeant in Normandy. the cast list from imdb lists some French names, but no Greeks.
