I remember a film possibly american where to strengthen their arms a new in take of troops have to stand holding buckets of sand while their arms are extended. One guy can do this for hours by meditating that he is making love to his girl.

Can anyone remember the name of this early 70's movie?

I do recall this TV drama, about the Civil War, Patrick Swayze was the main star, the sadistic Sargeant is called Bent.

Here's the link, it's called North and South........the bucket holding scene is about all I remember!

    "North and South" (1985) (mini)

There certainly was a sadistic sargeant but I'm sure it was a movie. Not sure about Patrick Swayze.

This one has cropped up before. I believe the film is Tribes from 1970 starring Jan-Michael Vincent.

Definitely not North and South, the American Civil War series.

In that, Patrick Swayze and one other were required to hold heavy buckets (whilst marching on the spot) as punishment during their time as Army Cadets.

But their buckets were filled with water not sand, the water not to be spilled during the marching, and although Swayze had left his girl behind at his plantation, I don't think there was any connection with the puinishment.
