The movie was B/W, I don't recall the stars but there were a number of well know character actors (I knew the faces but not the names) appearing in minor roles. It has the look of an Ealing Studios comedy bit if it was it wasn't one of their most famous ones. The plot is of a quiet, middle-aged clerk in a London office who is asked to deliver a package by his boss, he doesn't know it but the address given is that of a notorious lady of the night who happens to be the boss's mistress. Someone from the office sees him leaving the address and immediately rumors start that he is having an affair. His reputation soars and he goes from being a quiet nonentity, bullied at work and hen-pecked by his wife at home to becoming a figure of envy. His whole life changes for the better, his boss gives him a raise to keep him quiet, his wife starts to treat him with more respect because she thinks she has competition.

There are a lot of nudge, nudge, wink, wink jokes and shots of bowler hatted business with tightly furled umbrellas in commuter railway carriages, reading The Times and gossiping about the scandal.

    Ring a bell with anyone?

    Thanks for any help.

    Dave.

Got strong recollections of this one, possibly with Charles Victor playing the very subserviant middle-aged clerk?

Was it a side-story in The Ant and the Grasshopper, one of stories in W Somerset Maugham's trilogy in Encore?

Thankyou both for the speedy responses.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't _ THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER_. I remember that one quite well.

_THERE'S ALWAYS A THURSDAY_ appears to be the one although the plot was rather more complex than my memories of it.

    Thanks again.
