This one has come to mind every time I've visited the seaside in the last 35 years or so.

An oddly vivid memory from my childhood is being in the room when my parents were watching a tv play - would have been very late 60s or 1970 at the latest. It featured a couple of young men wasting a day at the beach. The scene that sticks in my mind is when one encourages the other deliberately to fall forwards onto his face in the sand; the other one believes him when he says the sand won't hurt, and unsurprisingly makes a mess of his face.

I still remember my mother sternly lecturing me that these were "VERY silly young men"!

Perhaps a long shot, but you never know...
