i remember seeing this as a kid ,a ghost ship of pirates and when they came close enough to make individuals out ,they were skellingtons ! .its not jason and the agronauts ,and i dont think they were that well animated or special effected or whatever the correct phrase is .it was probably made early 60s i think . although they were obviously pirates on a ship i think most of the film took place on dry land in the coastal town they were haunting

Sounds a tiny bit like "The Fog". (to be seen every night somehwhere on Freeview).

But not 1960's and prpbably far to scary for a child - More 'orrible than just skellingtons.

    Sounds fun though.

I faintly remember this, I have a feeling that it was a Disney.

Long shot david, could it have been Secrets of the Pirates' Inn (1969) (TV)

    good luck

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Hammer's CAPTAIN CLEGG aka NIGHT CREATURES (1962) starring Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed.

My money's on Captain Clegg too. Luminous skeletons on horseback that frighten an old man into a marsh and drown him.

Oh wow! I knew about the George Arliss version, I had no idea Hammer and Disney had adapted the story too! I love these books.

The film trailer for Captain Clegg can be seen at Youtube, and it certainly features some luminous, bony things!

I expect the Captain was also an inspiration for the character of the Reverend Flasher in Carry on Dick!

Got to have been, much like the Black Fingernail was inspired by the Scarlet Pimpernel. Dr Syn is also supposedly an inspiration of Zorro and thus Batman.

I’ve been trying to remember the name of a film (waaaay old school - maybe mid-70's) that had 4 horsemen who dressed (along with the horses?) in skeletal costumes. This was to scare the locals (perhaps?) ... I remember them riding across fields at night ...

    and that's about it ...

    ....any help appreciated

    thanks

It sounds like Captain Clegg (1962) to me. It starred Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed.

    Captain Clegg:

Captian Collier (Patrick Allen) arrives in and English coastal town with his band of navy men to investigate reports of illegal smuggling and bootlegging, only to find that he must also investigate reports of "Marsh Phantoms," being said to ride on phantom horses through the marshes spreading terror to any who encounter them. The Captian suspects that the local vicar (Peter Cushing) is hiding something as well.
